Synopsis :

First skeptic about climate change, the environmental photographer James Balog (National Geographic) conducted the boldest expedition of his life: “The Extreme Ice Survey”. With a group of young adventurers in tow, Balog began using revolutionary time-lapse cameras designed for one purpose: to capture a multi-year record of the world’s changing glaciers across the brutal Arctic. This breathtakingly beautiful documentary ,tells the story of a visionary artist who, in facing his own mortality, is passing on the magic of photography – with an astonishing variety of shapes, colours, and translucent ice - and the adventure of the expedition to a new generation. He gathers undeniable evidence of our changing planet and delivers hope to our carbon-powered planet.

Director :

In 2007 Stanford student and New York native Jeff Orlowski got his first taste of the Arctic when he worked as a videographer with National Geographic photographer James Balog on the initial expedition of the Extreme Ice Survey (EIS). Jeff’s previous work has taken him to the Tour de France for a behind – the - scenes documentary, and he has photographed and filmed a number of people including Robin Williams, Jane Goodall, and Nelson Mandela.

Critics :

Aesthetics and eco-advocacy are a perfect match in ‘Chasing Ice’, a doc so stuffed with eye-soothing images one prays it can seduce a climate-change skeptic or two.”
By John DeFore, Hollywood Reporter, janvier 2012

“You’ve never seen images like this before… It deserves to be seen and felt on the big screen.”
Robert Redford

“One of the most beautiful films of the year.”
Regina Weinreich, Huffington Post

“Must-see time-lapse visuals.”
Justin Chang, Variety

“Astonishing cinematography and gripping narrative carry the viewer into reaches of the creation rarely encountered by any human. What we find there is beautiful beyond description and, disturbingly, disappearing. Everyone should see this film.”
Rusty Pritchard, Flourish
